In the ever-evolving landscape of fashion, it’s refreshing to witness women shattering glass ceilings and leading major brands. Among these trailblazers is Michelle Rhee, who has recently taken the reins as the new head of design at 3.1 Phillip Lim. Stepping into this role in September, Rhee follows the departure of the brand’s namesake, Phillip Lim, and becomes the first designer to interpret and evolve the brand’s vision since its inception over two decades ago.



Rhee’s appointment is particularly noteworthy, as it positions her in a unique place. Unlike many brands that have seen a revolving door of creative leadership, 3.1 Phillip Lim has only had one voice guiding its aesthetic: Lim himself. This presents Rhee with both a challenge and an opportunity to infuse the brand with her personal touch and innovative ideas. “This is a brand that’s really important to the New York fashion scene, and also to me. It’s been a brand that’s dear to my heart. I’m excited to bring some freshness to this new chapter,” Rhee shared with Fashionista, expressing her honor and enthusiasm for the role.
With a stellar background that includes studying at NYU and Parsons, working at esteemed labels like Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam 10 Crosby, and launching her own womenswear brand in 2023, Rhee is undeniably equipped for this new venture. However, she humbly admits that no one can ever be fully prepared for such a significant responsibility. “I don’t know if anyone is ever really ready,” she laughs. “I think the brand really resonates and speaks to me. My natural sensibility really aligns with who our woman is. I’m excited to inject my personal aesthetic and ideas into the future.”
